AAFA Timeline

This is a simple chronology of AAFA or a time line that shows when, what, where, who, etc. with links as applicable. It will be "in process" for most of this post anniversary year and entries may not be made in perfect sequence. Some members will be mentioned but most of the 1395 members will not be because they have not participated or contributed over and above the majority of the membership. In some cases the exact day or month will not be known for certain and such entries will be at the beginning of the appropriate month or year.

In a number of cases the entry will appear before the association was created because it was action of the folks participating in this particular Alford emphasis made before the decision to form the association. Were it not for them and what they did before 1987 there would have been no AAFA.

January 1987: Announcement of the creation of AAFA was made in Gil Alford's About Alfords newsletter.

This was the very first ever mention of an association, and Gil Alford will be the first to tell you that he had no idea what he was doing or where it was all going. This will be evident in some ensuing correspondence. For starters there was a paragraph in his "Editor's Comments" on page 2 of the newsletter. It read:
When the About Alfords newsletter mentioned above was mailed out along with each issue went two forms and a copy of the proposed constitution. One form was an AAAF Membership Application and the other was an Applicant Information Sheet. The latter was primarily for the purpose of getting volunteers. A copy of that proposed constitution no longer exists. It was soon replaced by:

The information form asked for some important and interesting information. Responses were consolidated and tabulated. They went a long way in the initial staffing of the association.

In the article a "membership certificate suitable for framing" and a membership card were promised for each Founding Member which was defined as only those persons on the About Alfords mailing list. The definition would later be modified and the practice of providing membership cards discontinued.

The plan included inviting 8000 other Alfords to join as charter members. The schedule, which was part of this original announcemnet, was to contact most Alfords in the USA during 1987.

Some folks are likely to wonder where we would find the names of 8000 Alfords in 1987 before the Internet was as forthcoming as it is today.

During 1988 we were to appoint a nominating and elections committee and other committees. Officers and committee members were to assume office immediately and serve until the next (first) election.

Editor Pamela Alford Thompson introduced her style and the format that she would follow for the rest of her time as editor. Watch it grow over the next two years to 48 pages in December 1989.
