Hawaii Obituaries HAWAII OBITUARIES OF ALFORDS
AND SPELLING VARIATIONS
Obituaries are listed alphabetically by FIRST name. Included are people whose last name, maiden name, or married name is Alford or a spelling variation: Alfred, Alvord, Allford, Halford, Hallford, Holford, etc.
The name of the newspaper (or other source) and place and date of publication follow the name of the deceased. If we included the obituary in AAFA ACTION, the issue is noted.
The Alford American Family Association (AAFA) often adds notes to each obituary, including Social Security Death Index (SSDI) data, relationship of the deceased to other Alfords, and lineages. We add to AAFA NOTES as time permits.
Where lineages are included (Alford unless otherwise stated), the format is: Name, year of birth, state or country of birth.
Obituaries of AAFA members and sometimes their spouses are also included on AAFA Member Memorials and may include more information.
We welcome corrections and additional information. If you have an obituary from this state that is not included here, please share it with us!

HONOLULU STAR-BULLETIN
Honolulu, Honolulu Co., HI—Thursday, 22 October 2009
A former Maui police officer shot his wife to death before shooting himself, according to Maui police.
Police released the identities yesterday of the man and woman killed in what police called a murder-suicide case as Barry Alford, 59, and his wife, Karolyn, 58, of Makawao.
Autopsy results indicated that Barry Alford died from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head. His death was classified as a suicide. His wife died from two gunshot wounds, one to the head and one to the chest, police said. Her death was classified as a homicide.
The investigation is ongoing.
Police said Barry Alford joined the Maui Police Department on April 16, 1985, and resigned two years later. He was rehired in June 1990 and resigned as a lieutenant in November 2000. Less than 2 1/2 years later, Alford was rehired again as a sergeant and resigned on April 30, 2008.
In a statement, Maui Police Chief Gary Yabuta said, “We are saddened for the family of the late Barry and Karolyn Alford. The department will be missing a fine former employee. Former Sgt. Alford was a dependable employee until he decided to resign in April 2008.”
Property tax records show the couple moved into the three-bedroom home at 310 Iini Way in September 1992 when the subdivision was first developed in Makawao.
Neighbor Becky Serrato said she never thought something like this would happen in their quiet neighborhood where everyone helps one another. “They were very good people. They never bothered anybody,” she said. Police responded to a 911 call of domestic abuse with possible gunshots at 10:15 p.m. Monday.
Serrato said she was watching television when her husband and son heard three gunshots. Her son told her it could have been hunters since there’s a gulch behind the Alfords’ home. But 15 minutes later, the Serratos realized something was wrong after police, firefighters and paramedics arrived at their neighbors’ home.
Serrato said she didn’t know Barry Alford well, but often spoke to Karolyn Alford. “She was a very outgoing and friendly person,” she said, noting that Karolyn Alford was once employed with Kapalua Land Co. Ltd.
During the holidays, she made fudge and baked cookies for her neighbors and their children, Serrato said.
Serrato said she will remember her conversations with Karolyn Alford and her smile. “My heart is so broken for her,” she said.
The couple is survived by a daughter.

KEN ALFORD, 79, TUNED ISLES IN TO DIXIELAND
By Harold Morse
Ken Alford—Honolulu band leader, musician and television personality—died yesterday in Straub Hospital. He was 79.
After his 1949 Hawaii arrival, he became an announcer-writer with radio station KULA from 1949 to 1951 and with KGU from 1951 to 1953.
He made daily TV appearances on KGMB-TV as Sheriff Ken in “Sheriff Ken’s Posse” from 1953 to 1958 and from 1958 to 1965 on KONA-TV.
Musically a trumpet player, he and his Dixie Cats band performed at a number of Hawaii hotels. During World War II Army service, Alford played with jazz bands and was an entertainment director for USO camp shows.
He organized his own Dixieland group here in 1950 and enjoyed a record-breaking 16-year Sunday evening run at the Moana Hotel Banyan Court.
He performed at Hawaii arrivals of four presidents—Truman, Eisenhower, Johnson and Nixon.
Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong not only attended the wedding of Alford and Donna Nance, Satchmo also made a rare sit-in appearance with Alford’s band. Another highlight was Benny Goodman’s sitting in with the group to play his big hits of the 1930s.
Alford’s band performed for the 1959 Hawaii Statehood celebration in Waikiki, also for the 125th anniversary of Parker Ranch; and he played for a three-day grand opening of Lawrence Rockefeller’s Mauna Kea Beach Hotel in 1965.
Another highlight was a 1977 Dixie Cats gig at Hawaii Theater downtown for the 80th anniversary of the first Consolidated movie showing here.
Tony Todaro, chronicler of Hawaiian musical entertainment, summed up Alford’s contribution: “Ken Alford gave Hawaii a Dixieland beat to its favorite Island melodies.”
He was named entertainment “Father of the Year” in 1960 by the Honolulu Chamber of Commerce.
Born in Santa Cruz, Calif., he attended San Jose State. He joined New York Life Insurance Co. in 1965 and later became a member of its “Million Dollar Round Table.”
He is survived by wife Donna; sons Ken Jr., Thomas and John; daughter Nancy Alford; sisters Dorothy Smith [AAFA #0918] and Myra McWhinney [AAFA #0930]; and one grandchild.
Services are pending.
