WORK IN
PROGRESS
Represented
here are all obituaries we currently have for “Alfords” who died in Georgia
that HAVE NOT BEEN INCLUDED in AAFA ACTION, plus those included in the
Fall 1998 and Winter 2000 issues. As time permits, we will add obituaries that
we previously included in AAFA ACTION and periodically post updates,
including newly acquired obituaries and additional “AAFA NOTES.” As always, we
welcome information you might have on these or any other “Alfords” who died in
Georgia.
GEORGIA OBITUARIES OF ALFORDS
AND SPELLING VARIATIONS
Obituaries are listed alphabetically by FIRST name. Included
are people whose last name, maiden name, or married name is Alford or a
spelling variation: Alfred, Alvord, Allford, Halford, Hallford, Holford, etc.
The name of the newspaper (or other source) and place and
date of publication follow the name of the deceased. If we included the
obituary in AAFA ACTION, the issue is noted.
The Alford American Family Association (AAFA) usually adds
notes for each obituary, including Social Security Death Index (SSDI) data,
relationship of the deceased to other Alfords, and lineages. However, in the
interest of making the obituaries available online, we did not add notes to most
of these Georgia obituaries. We will add to AAFA
NOTES as time permits.
Where lineages are included (Alford unless otherwise stated),
the format is: Name, year of birth, state or country of birth.
Obituaries of AAFA members and their spouses are also included
on the AAFA Member
Memorials web page and may include more information.
We welcome corrections and additional information. If you
have an obituary from this state that is not included here, please share it
with us!

THE
JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION
Atlanta, Fulton Co., GA—Wednesday, 19 April 2006

Angus Linder Alford was born on December 27,
1908 in Hartwell, Georgia, son of Owen Judson Alford and Louise Linder Alford.
He went to grammar school and high school in Hartwell and was quite a good
athlete in high school, playing basketball, football and baseball. He was
raised by his grandparents after his mother died of tuberculosis when he was
two years old and his father died in the flu epidemic in 1918. He graduated
from the University of Georgia with a degree in Business Administration and
remained an ardent Bulldog Fan.
He lived in Hartwell and worked in his
grandfather’s dry goods store until he and his wife, Mary Talton Alford moved
to Atlanta in 1937 and he went to work for Sears Roebuck. He was a buyer for
Sears for 35 years until his retirement in 1972. At Sears his colleagues always
called him “AL”, because his intials were A.L. No one has ever called him by
his given name, Angus, and only family members and close friends called him
Linder. Some of his working buddies liked to call him “Hopalong” because he
looked so much like Bill Boyd, the actor who played Hopalong Cassidy in the
movies. Little kids used to come up to him and ask him if he really was
Hopalong Cassidy, and he always hated to tell them he really wasn’t.
His wife died in 1961 and he lived alone in his
home in Decatur until moving into an assisted living facility in Tucker in
November, 2001. He was a member of the Decatur First Baptist Church.
He has a daughter, Barbara Reed, a son-in-law,
Bob Reed, two grandsons, Robert David Reed and John Alford Reed and one
great-grandson, Alec Alford Reed.
He continued to participate in sports most of
his life. He played golf at the American Legion course in Avondale Estates and
actually scored two “holes in one” in the 1970’s. His grandsons now proudly
display those golf balls and scorecards in their homes. He bowled into his late
80’s and also jogged about 3 miles three times a week until he was 83 years
old. The funeral will be Thursday, April 20, 2006, at 11 AM in the Bill Head
Funeral Home, Lilburn/Tucker Chapel with Dr. Loren Pugh officiating. Interment
Hartwell Cemetery at 3:30 PM. The family will receive friends following the
service at the Bill Head Funeral Homes and Crematory, Lilburn/Tucker Chapel,
770-564-2726.

THE
JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION
Atlanta, Fulton Co., GA—Thursday, 20 April 2006
Linder Alford, 97, UGA grad of class of 1931, buyer for
Sears
By Derrick Henry
Angus Linder Alford went by several names. To
his family, he was Linder. To his friends and colleagues he was Al, a
derivative of his initials. To neighborhood children, he was frequently
mistaken for Hopalong Cassidy, the enormously popular TV and film cowboy of the
1940s and 1950s.
He never went by the name Angus.
As a regional buyer for Sears’ nursery
department 1949-72, Mr. Alford supplied a generation of gardeners with their
needs for flowers, plants and shrubs. He was respected as a leader and made his
department a profitable one, said his daughter, Barbara Reed of Tucker.
Because of his striking resemblance to William
Lawrence Boyd, the actor who played Hopalong Cassidy, she said, “Little kids
would come up to him on the street and ask if he was Hopalong Cassidy. He
always hated to have to tell them no and disappoint them.”
One night his friends decided to have some fun.
At a store opening for Sears, a colleague told the emcee that a celebrity was
in the crowd. The spotlight was directed on Mr. Alford, and the emcee told the
crowd it was Hopalong Cassidy.
Mr. Alford, 97, died Monday of heart failure at
his assisted living residence, Sunrise at Tucker. The funeral is 11 a.m. today
at Bill Head Funeral Home, Lilburn/Tucker Chapel.
The Hartwell native had a tough childhood. His
mother died of tuberculosis when he was 2. His father died from flu when he was
9. He was reared by his grandparents, Angus Notley Alford and Arlie Fisher
Alford. Mr. Alford helped out his grandfather in his dry goods store on the
town square.
After graduating from the University of Georgia
with a business degree in 1931, Mr. Alford returned to work for his
grandfather. It was during the Depression, and they frequently were paid in
poultry, pigs and produce.
Mr. Alford saw an attractive young woman walk by
the store, asked about her and said he’d like to meet her. A dinner date was
arranged that very night. It was love at first sight for Mr. Alford and Mary
Elizabeth Talton, who was in town to visit her aunt. They married in 1933 and
lived with his grandparents.
In 1937, the couple moved to Atlanta, where Mr.
Alford landed a job stocking the warehouse at Sears for $5 a week. Four years
later, Sears sent him to Chicago where he became a buyer for dairy equipment.
He was transferred to Atlanta in 1949 to work for the nursery department.
More tragedy struck in 1961. Mr. Alford’s wife
died. “I gave him permission to remarry, but he never did,” his daughter said. “Every
widow lady in DeKalb County brought him meals for a while, until they realized
he wouldn’t give in. He said he was a one-woman man.”
Mr. Alford “learned to cook enough not to
starve,” she said.
At his Decatur residence, he made his own
repairs and mowed his lawn. An avid golfer, he had a handicap of 8-10 strokes
and shot two holes-in-one at the American Legion course in Avondale Estates
during the 1970s. He jogged 3 1/2 miles at least three times a week until he
fell and broke his arm when he was 83. He was forced to stop golfing as well
but continued to bowl.
Into his late 80s, Mr. Alford bowled weekly at
Suburban Lanes with 14 cronies. He averaged more than 200 a game, his daughter
said. When virtually all his bowling buddies had died, Mr. Alford quietly laid
his own ball to rest.

BOBBY WEST ALFORD
THE
JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION
Atlanta, Fulton Co., GA—Sunday, 19 April 2009
COLLEGE PARK: Bobby West Alford, 87, retired English teacher
By Holly Crenshaw
She kept her hair in a tidy bun at the back of
her head.
She stood maybe 5-foot-2, maybe more, depending
on how much a person shriveled in her presence.
She never paced around her classroom at Woodward
Academy or lectured standing up.
Instead, she sat with a prim calmness behind her
desk while she somehow managed to totally dominate a classroom full of boys.
And when she died, those former students
expressed their love and awe of Bobby West Alford in an outpouring of online
condolences.
They described how she could be stern and a
little intimidating yet reprimanded them with a twinkle in her eye.
They described how she refused to mince words
yet showered them with encouragement. They called her Lady Alford as an
expression of their affection.
A memorial service will be held for Bobby West
Alford at 2:45 p.m. April 27 in Woodward Academy’s Gresham Chapel. Mrs. Alford,
87, died March 10 at her College Park residence of chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease. H.M. Patterson & Son, Spring Hill, is in charge of
arrangements.
Mrs. Alford taught literature and English
grammar at Woodward Academy for 35 years—starting in 1956 when it was still the
all-male Georgia Military Academy—and rose to become chairwoman of the upper
school’s English department.
Current chairwoman Peggy McNash of Smyrna said
the petite, immaculately dressed Mrs. Alford would stay for hours after school
to coax every bit of their best work from her students.
“She jokingly said she could have been admitted
to every college in the country because she worked on so many essays,” Mrs.
McNash said. “But she was always willing to go over them one more time and one
more time and one more time.”
Often, she preferred to teach what others
considered the more problematic students, said her stepdaughter, Anne Mudgett
of Corona del Mar, Calif.
“I think Bobby was sort of a psychologist at
heart,” her stepdaughter said. “She was always looking for the motivations in
people, and she felt that literature provided ordinary people with insights
that they could apply to their own relationships.”
Maybe that’s why one of Mrs. Alford’s favorite
authors was Thomas Hardy, who certainly knew a thing or two about the shadowy
landscape of the soul.
She committed lengthy passages of poetry and
prose to memory, then whipped them out at just the right moment to make her
point.
In fact, her one-liners became the stuff of
Woodward legend.
“You didn’t put one over on her verbally, ever,”
her stepdaughter said.
When a student saw the poor test score he’d
received and exclaimed, “Dear God Almighty!” she advised, “I think you should
call on someone who knows you.”
When an irate parent insisted on knowing why her
son had received an F, Mrs. Alford coolly replied, “Well, it’s the lowest grade
the academy will permit me to give.”
After she retired in 1990, her later years were
colored by the deaths of her son, Robert Coleman Alford, in 1991 and her
husband, Coleman Alford, in 1994.
She maintained her obsession with antiques, so
much so that her collection of china, porcelain, silver, lamps and other
decorative objects filled three large trucks after her death.
But at 87, the tiny yet still formidable Mrs.
Alford “could still hold onto stuff in her mind that would blow most people out
of the water,” her stepdaughter said.
“So many people, as they age, become mentally
mushy. But she didn’t. She was just as sharp to the end,” she said.
“I just wish that all of us could live to that
age and have that kind of self-possession.”
She is also survived by a stepson, Tom Alford of
Clinton, Tenn.; and four grandchildren.
AAFA NOTES: SSDI
records show that Bobby W. Alford (SS# issued in GA) was born 29 May 1921, last
residence Atlanta, Fulton Co., GA.

Dr. Dewitt Alfred, one who ‘thought outside the box’
By Kay Powell
Dr. Dewitt C. Alfred Jr. entered Morehouse
College at 14, graduated at 18 and returned to become dean of Morehouse School
of Medicine.
The same precocious mind that got him admitted
to college after the 10th grade kept absorbing and retaining information
throughout his life, whether it was history he used in his lectures or facts
that amazed his friends.
“He was known for knowing all types of trivial
things,” said his wife, Leticia Alfred of Atlanta. “He was a walking
encyclopedia.”
His influence reached far beyond the medical
school. During two five-year terms on the state Board of Human Resources, which
sets policy for the Department of Human Resources, he served one term as
chairman.
The funeral for Dr. Alfred, 68, of Atlanta, who
died of complications from heart problems Monday at Emory University Hospital,
will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Radcliffe Presbyterian Church. The body will be
cremated. Murray Bros. Cascade Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Dr. Alfred was a professor of psychiatry at
Emory University for 13 years.
While there, he established a community mental
health center at Grady Memorial Hospital and designed the psychiatry curriculum
for the new Morehouse School of Medicine.
He was immersed in academics but had a fondness
for community psychiatry and forensic psychiatry, his wife said.
“He can certainly be given credit for making
major advances in our clinical program,” said Andrea Fox of Atlanta, Morehouse
School of Medicine director of planning. “He was a very intelligent guy, a
great problem solver. He thought outside the box.”
After joining Morehouse School of Medicine’s
faculty in 1984, he was instrumental in securing multimillion-dollar grants and
in gaining approval for clinical services and various residency programs.
By 1992, the medical school was teaching family
medicine, internal medicine, general surgery, psychiatry and obstetrics.
In 1993, after four years as dean, Dr. Alfred
returned to the classroom, where he was a favorite faculty member.
“I think he had a special rapport with students,”
said his colleague, Dr. Bill Biggers of Atlanta. “The students really liked
him. He made learning fun.”
He retired in 2000 but kept up his interests in
working crossword puzzles and reading—which fed his love of trivia—dancing,
tennis and watching television, especially game shows, cop shows, medical shows
and “Jeopardy,” his wife said....

PHEBE JANE SAMMIS ALFORD
COLUMBUS ENQUIRER
Columbus, Muscogee Co., GA—Sunday, 7 August 1922
Mrs. Phoebe J. Alford, 91 years old, died
yesterday afternoon [August 6] at 12:10 o’clock at her home 701 First Avenue.
Mrs. Alford was one of the oldest residents of this city.
She was born in New York City on September 4,
1831 and was married to W. Capers Alford, of Troup County Georgia, on
December 6, 1849 [AAFA has 1848]. She moved to Columbus in 1844. Mrs. Alford
was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Sammis, who were among the pioneer
settlers of this city. Mr. Sammis was one of the leading merchants and citizens
of the city.
Mrs. Alford was one of the best known and
beloved ladies of this community. Her delight was to lend assistance and cheer
to all who might be in need. She was a devoted Christian and a consistent
member of the St. Luke Methodist Church, having united with the church in her
early childhood.
She will be sadly missed by her family and a
large number of friends. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. E.B. Porter
and Miss..[obviously something was left out here]...grandsons and granddaughters
among whom are Mrs. E.G. Abbot and N.H. Raymond, of this city and eighteen
great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 4:30 o’clock this
afternoon from the residence at 701 First Avenue. The interment will be in
Linwood Cemetery.
AAFA NOTES: Phebe Jane
Sammis married Whitman C. Alford in Muscogee Co., GA, on 6 Dec 1848 [Georgia
Marriagesto 1850 (Ancestry.com)].
Whitman Capers Alford died in 1865.
Whitman is probably the W.C. Alford listed in
the 1864 CENSUS FOR REORGANIZING THE GEORGIA MILITIA as a barkeeper, age 46,
from Troup Co. They were in Troup Co. in 1850 and 1860. Phoebe was in Muscogee
Co. from before 1870 until her death. Her daughter Celestia (born 1858) was
still living with her in 1920 so is probably the Miss mentioned in the obit.
Her FindAGrave.com memorial lists her as Phebe
Jane Sammis Alford, daughter of Richard Sammis and Mary Ann Byrne.
This family descends from Julius Alford (born 1750)
and Rebecca Jackson, Julius being a son of Lodwick Alford. Not much is known
about their children. A son Richard Lodwick born 1849 (7 months old in 1850)
died Apr. 16, 1859. The 1860 census differs in the listing of children as
compared to 1870. In 1860, there are three: W.H. (7), Leonidas (4) and Celestia
(2). In 1870, Phoebe J. is living in Columbus with children Mary E. (18), Phebe
