Willie joined the AAFA in January 1989 and was soon known as something of a utility fellow to several of the leadership. He would help with anything at the slightest indication help was needed. He was the first member to share in the genealogy compilation work using the computer genealogy program and he managed the Isham Alford branch before it was taken over by Janice Smith. He served for a while as the AAFA Florida State Representative, but since his family was from Mississippi he did much to help with MS Alford information which included copies of over 100 MS Alford death certificates.
