            Mr. James A. Hazelton, Pine Mountain, GA, passed away Friday, May 25, 2001. He would have been 90 years old on May 26. Mr. Hazelton was a long-time resident of Fayetteville, GA, before moving to Pine Mountain. He was active in numerous community and church organizations. As a member of the Fayetteville United Methodist Church from 1939-1997, he served in many leadership positions. Since 1997, he has been a member of the Pine Mountain United Methodist Church. For 35 years, Jim was employed by the Department of the Army at Fort McPherson, where he served as Publication Officer.

            Upon his retirement, he was awarded the Meritorious Civilian Service Award, the second highest award offered to civilian workers. After his career with the Army, he had a second career as a real estate broker in Fayetteville. In 1991, he was named Outstanding NARFE Member in Georgia and in 1976 was named Fayette County Citizen of the Year. Jim was instrumental in organizing the Senior Citizens Center in Fayetteville and it remained among his proudest accomplishments.

            He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Opal Holt Hazelton; a son, James Kenneth (Harriet) Hazelton, Fayetteville, GA; a daughter, Nancy (Robert) Epstein, Pine Pountain, GA; sisters, Charlotte Buckley, Rome, GA and Marion Hazelton, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; grandchildren, Bryan (Jennifer) Hazelton, Fayetteville, GA, Michael (Michelle) Hazelton, Hartwell, GA, Susan Hazelton, Fayetteville, GA, Steven (Sheryl) Hazelton, Wake Forest, NC, Alicia (Kevin) Madden, British Columbia, Canada, Al Anderson, Fayetteville, GA, Jennifer Epstein, Charlotte, SC and 8 great-grandchildren.

            Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., May 28, at Pine Mountain United Methodist Church, with Rev. Steve Moore and Rev. Carol Scroggs officiating. At 3 p.m. a graveside burial service will be held in Fayetteville at Camp Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be 3-5 p.m. Sunday at Cox Funeral Home in Hamilton, GA.

            In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Pine Mountain United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 246, Pine Mountain, GA 31822.
