San Jose, Santa Clara Co., CA—Friday, 11 August 2000

 

            Cal D. Alford, born February 20, 1918, at Latham [LeFlore Co.], Oklahoma, died August 9, 2000, at Campbell [Santa Clara Co.], California. A resident of Campbell since 1937, he had been a volunteer with both the Fire Department and Campbell Police Auxiliary, served in the Merchant Marines during World War II, and was a dedicated member of the Odd Fellows Morning Light Lodge #42 for 53 years. He retired from the Campbell Lumber Company after 33 years. He was an avid outdoorsman, who loved fishing, hunting, and spending time at his cabin in Twain Harte.

            Cal’s greatest source of pride and happiness was his family. He was a devoted husband to his beautiful wife, Sibyl, whom he adored for 61 years. He was the loving father of Bud Alford of Campbell and the late Harvey Alford, loving grandfather to Deidra Redford, Carrie Pesavento, Chris Craviotto, Peggy Austin, and Mary Voron, great-grandfather to Thomas Redford, Tyler Pesavento, Mathew and Justin Craviotto, Jordyn and Wyatt Austin.

            Funeral services [will be] held on Monday, August 14, 2000, at Darling and Fischer Campbell Memorial Chapel, Campbell, California. Burial followed at Oak Hill Memorial Park, San Jose, California.

            We included the obituaries of his paternal grandmother, Laura Judson Cagle Alford, in Texas Obituaries; and sisters-in-law Alice Elizabeth Raleigh Alford and Daisy Catherine Holder Finney Alford McKinney in Oklahoma Obituaries.

            Cal did not submit his lineage information when he joined AAFA.

            CA Births list Harvey Dennis Alford, born 15 Aug 1940 in Santa Clara Co., and Robert Duane Alford, born 12 March 1943 in Alameda Co., both mother’s maiden names Bowden.

            Several family trees on Ancestry.com list him as Cal Dee Alford, son of Harvey Lee Alford and Docia Trahern.

            The family is listed on the 1910 census in DeQueen, Sevier Co., AR: Harvey L. Alford, 28 AR, married 6 years; wife Docia 28 OK, 4 children, 4 living; and children, all born OK, Vere 5, Ophelia 4, James D. 2, and Horace 6/12.

            Cal’s mother, Docia Trahern, was one-quarter Choctaw, as listed on the U.S. Native American Enrollment Cards for the Five Civilized Tribes, 1898-1914 (Ancestry.com). She died 23 June 1919 in OK. Harvey married (2) Zura Gunn on 23 Dec 1920.

            On Harvey L. Alford’s 1942 WWII Draft Card (Ancestry.com), he is age 59, born 13 May 1882 in Nashville [Howard Co.], AR. He is living in Oakland, Alameda Co., CA, and lists his nearest relative as Zura Alford of the same address, “Government Island, United States Reversation [sic], Alameda, CA.”

            CA Deaths list Harvey L. Alford, born 13 May 1882 in AR, died 21 Nov 1956 in Santa Clara Co.
