Kathryn Alvord Perkins died peacefully on
Thursday, April 14, at her home in Napa. Born in Centralia, Wash. Jan. 3, 1922,
she was the great-granddaughter of Thomas Moody Alvord, an early settler of the
Kent, Wash. area. A graduate of Western Washington University, she married her
late husband, James J. Perkins, in 1944, and traveled the world while raising a
family until he retired from the Navy in 1960. They lived in Hawaii, Maine,
Okinawa, Maryland and Germany, with their final assignment at Skaggs Island
Naval Radio Station.
Kathryn taught special education in several
elementary schools in Napa, was past president of the local American Cancer Society,
past president of the Napa Valley Genealogical Society, member of the Optimists
Club, member of the Fleet Reserve Association Ladies Auxiliary and the DAR. An
enthusiastic member of the Sweet Adelines barbershop chorus during the 1970s,
she was a member of the “Honey Buns” quartet. An avid bridge player and opera
fan, she was active in both until very recently.
She is survived by her sons, Michael Perkins of
Santa Rosa and Lawrence Perkins of Napa; half-brother Richard Alvord of Seattle
and half-sisters, Margenia Simmons of Oregon City, Barbara McGhee and Martha
McNeill of Puyallup; as well as three grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m.
Friday, April 29 at Richard Pierce Funeral Service, 1660 Silverado Trail, Napa.
Memorial contributions may be made to the
American Cancer Society or the Napa Valley Genealogical Society.
