            Albert (Al) Alford Payne, 92, went to be with the Lord on Saturday May 1, 2010. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 8, at Adelphi Calvary Baptist Church in rural Runnells. Burial will be at Palmyra Cemetery in Palmyra.

            Al was retired from teaching at SE Warren Community Schools in Liberty Center and had also taught in Moravia and attended Adelphi Calvary Baptist Church.

            Al was born in Bostic [Rutherford Co.], N.C., and grew up in East Texas. Al served his country in the Navy during WW 2 as a Lieutenant on the USS Henley and his ship was sunk in the South Pacific for which he was awarded the Purple Heart. Al also served as a page to the US House of Representatives and Doorkeeper of the House and worked as a lobbyist for the National Association of Realtors. He came to IA in 1959 and worked in various political organizations. Al was proprietor of Patrick Henry Bookshop in the 1960's.

            Al is survived by a stepson, Marty Kimball; stepdaughter, Karla Wilson, and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, stepdaughter, three sisters, one brother and his parents.

            Memorial gifts may be made to the Adelphi Baptist Church ACTS Home School Academy.
