Isaac E. Alford—Born in 1919 in Society Hills, S.C. Passed away Oct. 30, 2005 in Bellevue [King Co.], Wa. Funeral Services 12 Noon Thursday, Nov. 3 at Evergreen-Washelli Funeral Home, 11111 Aurora Av. N., Seattle.

AAFA NOTES: SSDI records show that Isaac E. Alford (SS #245-16-2247 issued in NC) was born 8 Sept 1919. His last residence was Bellevue, King Co. WA.

Isaac reported to AAFA that his father was Robert Coleman Alford, b. 1888 in Darlington Co., SC, and that Robert’s father was Coleman Alford, b. about 1863 in SC, but these birth dates are incorrect.

From 1870 to 1920, this African American family was enumerated on censuses in Society Hill, Darlington Co., SC. Everyone named below was born in SC.

In 1920: Robert Alford 36, wife Pauline 35, and children Robert Jr. 7, Marion (son) 6, Alice 5, Rollon (son) 2, and Isaac 6/12.

In 1910, Robert is living with his parents: Coleman Alford 59, wife Easter 59 (17 children, 7 living), married 34 years; sons: John 27, Robert 23, Thornton 18, and Thurman 15; daughter Leila Evans 21 (1 child, 1 living), son-in-law Louis Evans 32, married 2 years, and granddaughter Louise 2.

            In 1900: Colman Alford 54 b. 1846 [written as Alford Colman, so entire family is indexed as Colman]; wife Easter 48 b. 1852 (17 children, 8 living) married 24 years; children: Minna 25 b. 1875, John 20 b. 1880, Janey 17 b. 1883, Robert 14 b. 1886, Lealer 11 b. June 1888, Thornton 10 b. May 1890, Ferman 6 b. Apr 1894; and grandchildren: Edith 10 b. May 1890, and Earl 2 b. Oct 1897.

In 1880: Coleman Alford 28, wife Easter 29, and children: Alice 9, Mina 5, Johnny 3, and Bessie 6/12 b. Dec.

In 1870, they are in Hamilton Township, P.O. Society Hill, but it is not clear how the people are related. Family #168: Alex Alford 50, Rebecca 48, William 6, and Annie 4. Family #169 is the family of Sam Washington 30 and Lucy 27 with 4 children. Family #170 looks like Annette Alford 13, Colman Alford 18, and Alexander Alford 7. Perhaps Lucy Washington and these last 3 Alford children are children of Alex and Rebecca.

None of these people were located on the 1860 census since they were probably slaves. The 1860 Slave Census for Darlington Co., SC, shows no Alford slave owners (slaves were not named but listed by age and sex only). In 1861 59% of the people in Darlington Co. were African-American [www.sonofthesouth.net/leefoundation/civil-war/1861/november/slave-map-south-carolina.htm].

            His lineage: Isaac Edwin 1919 SC1, Robert Coleman 1886 SC2, Coleman 1846 SC3.
