TRAVELERS REST [Greenville
Co.]—Pat Alford, 71, passed away Friday, August 18, 2006.
She was preceded
in death by her father, Paul Hunt of Travelers Rest, S.C., and by her son, Wes
Alford of Houston, Texas.
Born and raised
in Travelers Rest, Pat graduated from Columbia College and received a master’s
degree in Education from Furman University. She was cited for leadership at
Columbia College and was active in the chorus and drama clubs. In addition to
teaching elementary school, Pat was also a soloist at Buncombe Street United
Methodist Church in Greenville, S.C. She married Gene Alford and moved
to Houston, Texas. There she raised two children and helped establish her
husband’s medical practice. She was also a longtime member of both St. Paul’s
United Methodist Church and Chaplewood United Methodist Church. Many remember
her as a loyal friend who never met a stranger. She loved entertaining and
passed on her love of music to her children. She was a past president of both
her local DAR and Colonial Dames chapters in South Carolina. During her term
with the Colonial Dames, she helped to establish a local historical site.
Surviving are her
mother, Madeleine Hunt Morro; husband Gene Alford ; daughter, Madelon Alford
Morgan; son-in-law, Dave Morgan; and granddaughters, Maddie and Abbey Morgan,
all of Alpharetta, Ga.
The service will
be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, August 22, at the Howze Mortuary. The family will
receive family and friends from 1 to 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations
may be made to the Wes Alford Memorial Scholarship at Centenary College,
Shreveport, La.
