RALEIGH—Floyd Shelby Alford, 82, of 3005-101 Anderson Place,
died Tuesday, January 10, 2006 at Rex Healthcare.
The funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday
at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 2100 Noble Road. Burial will follow at the
Alford-Upchurch-Bunn Cemetery in Pilot, NC.
Mr. Alford, a native of Franklin County was the
son of the late Zollie Floyd Alford and Lala Batchelor Alford.
After serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII, he
graduated from Hardbarger Business College. He spent his career in the fuel oil
business in Raleigh. Active in promoting Oil Heat, he served leading positions
in local, state and National organizations. He was active in the Raleigh
Merchants Bureau, Raleigh Chamber of Commerce and the Exchange Club of North
Raleigh. He was a Mason and Shriner. Mr. Alford was a true southern gentleman.
A charter member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, he
served in many positions of leadership. He also served on committees for the
Raleigh Baptist Association and the NC Baptist Foundation.
He is survived by his wife, Lois Todd Alford;
children, Beverly Jean Alford of Burlington [AAFA #0345], Annette Alford Garvey
and her husband, Jack of Greensboro; daughter-in-law, Julia Webb Alford of
Kannapolis; grandchildren, Zachary, Meredith and Benjamin Alford, Jack, Jr. and
Charlotte Garvey; stepchildren, Dell Hinton of Morrisville, Fran Gowdy of Cary;
step-grandchildren, Kristen and Dakota Hinson, Andrea and Hunter Kirby;
brothers, Johnny Alford [AAFA #1472] of Pilot, Cloyce Alford of Raleigh [AAFA
#0279]; sister, Dorothy A. Batton of Bunn.
He was preceded in death by his first wife,
Rachel Pearce Alford, son, Floyd Shelby Alford, Jr. [AAFA #0722] and brother
James Barbee Alford [AAFA #0344].
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m.
