MCALLEN—Mary “Justine” Alford Monroe, 92, of McAllen, formerly of Yorktown, passed from this life on the afternoon of Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, in Edinburg, surrounded by her family.

            Justine was born on Jan. 13, 1916, in Lyons, to Richard Ervin Alford and Sara E. Griffin Alford, who preceded her in death.

            She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Tommy Ewing Alford and James Ervin Alford; and a sister, Laurinda Youngbloom.

            She leaves behind a daughter, Marcia Ann Monroe Mann of Yorktown; a son, Robert “Buddy” and Karon Monroe of McAllen; and sister, Patsy Alford Statton of Caldwell.

            Her camping partner and loving husband of 50 years, James W. Monroe, preceded her in death on Oct. 2, 1998. They were married on June 6, 1948.

            Her beloved grandchildren, “Cindy and Rick”, “Ricky and Laura”, “Tracey and Danny”, “Kris and Ana”, Jay, Chaz, Tanya, and Jimmy, and great-grandchildren, Chris, Courtney, Jeffrey, Caleb, Derek, Tyler, Kayce, Dara, Darla, Ethan, Carsyn, Aimsley, Kale, Hope, and Faith will miss her.

            After graduating from high school in San Marcos she attended Southwest Texas State University where she received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biology and a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in English, later returning to receive a Master’s of Education. She retired in 1976 after teaching school for 40 years.

            She was a member of the Eastern Star, Retired Teacher’s Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, and the United Methodist Church.

            Her interests were many and included teaching, reading, sewing, traveling, watching the Spurs, and all things simple and joyful. She loved her family and friends, and all of God’s creatures to whom she gave of herself with happiness.

            She was her daughter’s hero and her son’s best friend. She will be dearly missed.

            Services will be held at noon Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009 at Finch Funeral Chapel in Yorktown. Graveside services will follow at 4 p.m. at Lockhart City Cemetery in Lockhart. A visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009.

            Pallbearers: Ricky Mann, Jay Luna, Chris Mann, James W. Monroe II, Jeffrey Taylor, and Caleb Taylor.

            Honorary pallbearers: Chaz Brashier, Kris Gilmore, Danny Blank, Rick Milliken, Derek Hoffpauir, Ethan Gilmore, and Kale Blank.

            Memorials contributions may be made to The American Heart Association.

            A special thanks to her girls: Karon, Jamie, Lydia, Debbie, and Cathy.
