RACINE—Mr.
Harvey D. Alford, 78, passed away in St. Mary’s Medical Center on Tuesday,
March 9, 1999.
He
was born in Necedah [Juneau Co.] on September 10, 1920, to Margaret (nee:
Langendorf) and Charles B. Alford. At a very early age, he moved to Racine with
his family and resided here most of his life. On July 4, 1942, he was united in
a very long and loving marriage to the former Betty Ann Barrett.
During
World War II, he served with the Sixth Army from 1942 through 1945 in areas
from New Guinea to the liberation of the Philippines. Upon his return from
service, he worked short periods of time for Walker Manufacturing and
Ostergaard Bakery before joining the Racine Fire Department in 1948. There, he
served for more than 30 years and retired in 1975 as an Assistant Chief to
Chief Bucky Anderson.
Harvey
was a member of Olympia Brown Unitarian Universalist Church, a life member of
the V.F.W. Post 1391, the Retired Fire Fighters Association, the Racine
Heritage Museum, and several family genealogy associations.
Surviving
are his wife, Betty; their daughters, Lynn and her husband, Thomas F. Schmidt
and Laurie Alford; grandchildren, Megan and Benjamin Schmidt, all of Madison;
his sister, Dorothy Kopecky of Racine; sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, nieces,
and nephews. Mr. Alford was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother,
Gordon Alford.
Burial
will take place in West Lawn Memorial Park. Everyone is invited to meet with
the family from 4 p.m. until the time of the services. The family has suggested
that memorials be made to your favorite charity.
