Atlanta, Fulton Co., GA—Tuesday, 16 March 1993

 

            The funeral for Eleanor Petry Alford of Buford, retired owner of Vanguard Insurance Agency, will be at 11 a.m. today at Buford First United Methodist Church, with burial at 3 p.m. at Oaklawn Cemetery in Fort Valley, GA.

            Mrs. Alford, 68, died of cancer Saturday at her home.

            She retired from the independent insurance agency in 1986.

            Eleanor Lucille Petry was born Sept. 24, 1924, in Middletown, Ohio. She graduated from the University of Georgia in 1978 with a degree in art.

            Mrs. Alford was a former president of four organizations — the Gwinnett Council for the Arts; Gwinnett Choral Guild; Tucker Elementary PTA; and Pilot club of Tucker. She also was a former member of the board of directors of a Gwinnett unit of the American Cancer Society and a member of Buford First United Methodist Church.

            Surviving are her husband, Charles J. Alford Jr.; three sons, Charles J. Alford III and Walter C. Alford of Buford and Jon L. Alford of Tucker; her mother, Eleanor Bound of Cincinnati; three sisters, Ann Carrol of Midland, Texas, Elizabeth Parker of Cincinnati; and Karla Kiehm of Beaverton, Ore.; and eight grandchildren.

            Mrs. Eleanor Lucille (Lynn) Alford, age 68, of East Maddox Road, Buford, Georgia passed away on March 13, 1993.

            Surviving are her husband, Charles J. Alford, Jr., Buford; sons, Charles J. Alford, III, Buford, Jon Leslie Alford, Tucker, and Walter C. Alford, Buford; 8 grandchildren; mother, Eleanor Hampton Bound, Cincinnati, Ohio, formerly of Tucker; sisters, Ann Carrol, Midland, Texas, Elizabeth Hampton Parker, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Karla Kiehm, Beaverton, Oregon; and several nieces and nephews.

            Mrs. Alford was born in Middletown, Ohio on September 24, 1924; was graduated from Hughes High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1942, attended the University of Georgia 1942 and 1943. She was married to Charles J. Alford, Jr. in 1943 and they had three sons. She was as a legal secretary for her husband and in 1959 started her own insurance agency, Vanguard Insurance Agency, where she continued in the business until her semi-retirement in 1985.

            Upon her sons’ all graduating from the University of Georgia, she then returned to the University of Georgia in 1975 to continue her education and was graduated in 1978 cum laude with BFA in drawing and painting. Mrs. Alford spent the summer of 1977 in Italy with the University of Georgia’s “Studies Abroad Program” and worked one year on a part-time basis in Limited Edition Art Gallery in Lilburn, Georgia.

            Mrs. Alford was a Charter Vice-President and then President of the Tucker Elementary P.T.A., Charter Secretary of Dekalb Association of Independent Insurance Agents, Secretary and Director of the Tucker Community Association, Secretary of the Tucker Youth Council, Charter President of the Pilot Club of Tucker, First Woman Director of the Goals for Dekalb, Director of the American Cancer Society, Gwinnett Unit, Charter President and Director of Gwinnett Council for Arts, Charter Vice President of the Democratic Party of Dekalb County, Vice President and President of P.E.O. Chapter D, and Charter Member, Vice President and President of the Gwinnett Choral Guild. Mrs. Alford was a former member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Tucker, Georgia and at the time of her death was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Buford.

            Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 16, 1993 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Buford with the Rev. Herbert Owens and Rev. Bill Holcomb officiating.

            Interment in the Alford Family Plot in Oaklawn Cemetery, Fort Valley, GA at 3:30 p.m. The family will be receiving friends at the Funeral Home from 2:30-4:00 p.m. and from 7:00-9:00 o’clock p.m. on Monday. Arrangements by Flangian Funeral Home, Inc., Buford, Ga., 932-1133.
