ATLANTA [GA]—Omer Alford, 103, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005.
The service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at H.M. Patterson & Son, Spring
Hill Chapel, 1020 Spring St. N.W., Atlanta (404-876-1022), with burial at
Westview Cemetery....
Mrs. Alford was born in Clay County, N.C., the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D.D. Shermer. She joined and was baptized into the
fellowship of Baptist Tabernacle of Atlanta in 1926 and attended public schools
in Atlanta. She served the Georgia and Southern Baptist Conventions faithfully
and effectively as president of the Woman's Missionary Union of the Stone
Mountain Baptist Association. She was president of the Woman's Missionary Union
of the Georgia Baptist Convention; president of the Woman's Missionary Union
Board of the Southern Baptist Convention; vice president of the Georgia Baptist
Convention; a member of the Executive Committee of the Georgia Baptist
Convention and the Administration Committee of the Executive Committee, the
Public Affairs Committee, the Resolutions Committee and the Nominations
Committee; a member of the Georgia Temperance League; a member of the Committee
to Study Southern Baptist Convention Program; and the Southern Baptist
Con-vention's Committee on Committees, Committee on Boards and the Foreign
Mission Board. In her church, Mrs. Alford served as an adult Sunday school
teacher and as an officer in the Woman's Missionary Union....
Mrs. Alford is survived by a son, Denny Shermer
Alford; six grandchildren, including John Alford, Catherine Mann, Phoebe Alford
and Jeff Alford, all of Tallahassee; 16 great-grandchildren; and a
daughter-in-law, Lorena Alford of Tallahassee.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John
Inzer Alford, and a son, John I. Alford Jr.

Mrs. Omer Alford, 103, of Atlanta, died August
20, 2005. Mrs. Alford was born in Clay County, NC the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

avid supporter of missions and missionary efforts, Mrs. Alford was an inspiring
example of Christs message to "Go ye therefore..."
Mrs. Alford is preceded in death by her husband,
John Inzer Alford, and a son, John I. Alford, Jr.
She is survived by her son, Denny Shermer
Alford, 6 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday,
August 25, 2005 at 10:00 AM in the Chapel of H.M. Patterson & Son, Spring
Hill Chapel. Interment will follow at Westview Cemetery. The family will
receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of
flowers, memorials may be made to the Georgia Baptist Women's Missionary Union,
2930 Flowers Road South, Atlanta, GA 30341 in memory of Mrs. Alford.
