Franklin Co. NC Alfords
The families of brothers Lodwick and Julius Alford had been living in the area known as Franklin County for almost forty years before it became Franklin Co. When they first arrived in the area it was still very early in the history of North Carolina but there had been some activity there for a couple of generations.
Bertie County and before will provide some appreciation for the county boundary changes in the area before the Alfords moved from Virginia.
Edgecombe County shows the area about the time of the Alfords arrival in North Carolina. They might have been there by 1740 before the formation of Edgecombe Co. because by 1741 Lodwick had already purchased land. They resided in this area for five or six years while it was called Edgecombe.
Granville County became their home in 1746 but that does not necessarily mean they moved. They were likely already in the area which was the western half of Edgecombe that became Granville Co. They were residents of Granville Co. 18 years before their address was changed to Bute Co. It was during this period that Julius Alford, Lodwicks brother, acquired much of his land on the Tar River.
Bute County was cut from about the eastern half of Granville Co. in 1764 and it would be our Alfords home for another 15 years. Julius Alford died in the area in 1771 while it was called Bute County.
Franklin County was created in 1779 when Bute County was split across the middle with the northern half becoming Warren Co. The family had been in North Carolina for almost 40 years, and Alfords would remain in Franklin County until this very day.
